Recruiting Charnwood Museum Young Champions

As part of our Making Leicestershire My Home project, Charnwood Museum are looking to recruit Young Champions to support the project to make positive change in the community. Making Leicestershire My Home is a project that seeks to reflect on the stories of the people who have made Leicestershire their home over thousands of years. Using museum, heritage sites and libraries the Culture Leicestershire team seek to look into questions such as what makes Leicestershire home and to uncover the stories in our collections which connect with the people of Leicestershire’s present.

We are very excited to be recruiting for young people to volunteer at Charnwood Museum. We want to hear from you if you are aged 16-25 years old, to delve into the Making Leicestershire My Home project at Charnwood Museum. As a Charnwood Young Champion you will give us your thoughts and ideas and will act as an advocate for the museum as well as a critical friend to help us make sure that young people are considered in all things we do.

Culture Leicestershire has enjoyed working with young volunteers in an award project ‘Villiers Revealed: We Have Always Been Here’ which won the prestigious Team of the Year Award at the Museum & Heritage Awards 2026. The young people from the University of Nottingham were invited to find an object that connected with their interests, choosing objects from our Museum Collection and gained experience in research and curation. One volunteer said,“I’m excited to be part of this project because I feel like it means so much to the community, especially the LGBT+ community, and Leicestershire County Council itself. For myself, I’m excited to learn more about what it means curate an exhibition and what goes into that.” – Bryony, University Volunteer. Their insights into those objects were displayed in an online exhibition and feature on our website, offering others the opportunity to view our museum objects in a new light. Why Join the Charnwood Museum Young Champions?

  • Opportunity to make positive change.
  • Show off your passion for culture.
  • Gain skills and learn from cultural and heritage professionals.
  • Attend behind the scenes events and activities.

We realise young people are very busy and can struggle to find time to volunteer, therefore we have created the role with this in mind. The Charnwood Champions will meet monthly either online or in person at the museum to discuss the Making Leicestershire My Home project progress, and you will actively feed into the decision making process.

We are excited to welcome you into the site and hope this encourages other young people to utilise the free museum.

If you are interested in this volunteering role or know someone who is aged 16-25 years old who might be interested, then please encourage them to apply through this link. We know that online forms aren’t for everyone, we welcome other ways of applying for this role, including through video or art work. Please get in touch with one of our Volunteering Coordinators, Becca at rebecca.fisher@leics.gov.uk for more information.
