Birstall Library Puppet Theatre Project

At our first meeting with the library team, we learnt that the 0-7 audience is strong at the library. We discussed a few options for family centred activities to enhance the library for this age group and decided on a puppet theatre.

Lori, our fabulous puppeteer, held some fantastic taster sessions in early January, providing local families with a preview of what would be coming up in the main workshops in February. The main workshops did not disappoint, with fabric printing, the simple brilliance of shadow puppets and some amazing and imaginative hand puppets!

Lori also visited Hallam Fields Primary School to introduce Foundation and Year 2 children to the wonders of puppet theatres. There was then a follow up session at the library, and we all had such a brilliant time making a hand puppet then learning how to use our hands, bodies, and voices to make our puppets come to life!

At the end of March, we hosted a celebration event at the library where all the children and families involved were invited to showcase the work that they completed. We also unveiled the working puppet theatre Lori crafted using their ideas and the puppets created during the workshops. The puppet theatre will remain in the library for families to play with for years to come.
