Sandman Series by Neil Gaiman

Have you ever been in love? Horrible isn't it? It makes you so vulnerable. It opens your chest and it opens up your heart and it means that someone can get inside you and mess you up.

‐ Neil Gaiman, The Kindly Ones

I've been making a list of the things they don't teach you at school. They don't teach you how to love somebody. They don't teach you how to be famous. They don't teach you how to be rich or how to be poor. They don't teach you how to walk away from someone you don't love any longer. They don't teach you how to know what's going on in someone else's mind. They don't teach you what to say to someone who's dying. They don't teach you anything worth knowing.

‐ Neil Gaiman, The Kindly Ones

Everybody has a secret world inside of them. I mean everybody. All of the people in the whole world, I mean everybody — no matter how dull and boring they are on the outside. Inside them they've all got unimaginable, magnificent, wonderful, stupid, amazing worlds... Not just one world. Hundreds of them. Thousands, maybe.

‐ Neil Gaiman, A Game of You

What is the book about?

The trials and tribulations of Morpheus one of the 7 endless, personifications of various aspects of human nature. It is a ground-breaking graphic novel that pulls in threads and story lines from classical novels, renaissance literature and romantic words.

What was good about it?

It is so varied and intimate and each volume can be read in isolation. The art and design was something never before seen when first released and has since been emulated countless times without ever being surpassed.

What didn’t you like? (if anything)

Occasionally the choice of artist portrayed the characters in a way I didn’t appreciate.

Did it bring something positive to you?

By bringing together stories from across the ages it gave me an interest in the origins of the tales making me delve into different worlds.

Would you recommend it to others? Why?

Without a doubt and I frequently do – it’s a ground making genre defying collection of stories that really draw you in and was a big part of my teenage reading.
