Loughborough Library Local Studies Volunteer Group

If you want advice on local history and genealogy, then you won’t find more knowledgeable and enthusiastic people than the Loughborough Library Local Studies Volunteer Group (LLLSVG)!

They are a team of dedicated and experienced volunteers who help enhance and preserve the local studies collection in the Local and Family History Centre in Loughborough Library. They aim to make it more accessible to the public.

The Group also regularly completes projects: creating exhibitions, carrying out historical research and producing publications. Previous displays have included ‘Loughborough’s Three Railways’, ‘Ladybird Artists. Simply the Best . . . .’ and ‘The “Y” Listeners of Beaumanor’ – which was such a successful exhibition it can now be found at Beaumanor Hall. Publications include From an Artist’s Sketchbook. The Drawings of A.T. Warbis as featured in the Loughborough Echo 1950s to 1970s – Then & Now and The Forest Line. An Exploration of the Lost Charnwood Forest Canal and Horse Drawn Tramroads of the Leicester Navigation.

The Volunteers are currently working in partnership with Leicestershire County Council’s Heritage and Participation teams and Charnwood Borough Council on the exciting Market 800 project which is celebrating 800 years of Loughborough’s market and fair.

Despite not being able to access the library due to the recent lockdowns, this hasn’t stopped them. The Volunteers have been working on researching the history of Loughborough Market and writing historical content for the upcoming exhibition which will feature in Charnwood Museum. More information about this exciting project can be found here.
